S8: Episode 10 - Inside the Mind of a Two Time DEKA World Champion

This week on Overcomer’s Podcast we have an opportunity to talk with the World champion. World record holder for both Deka Strong and Deka Mile. Former professional Spartan athlete, Ryan Kent.

Ryan was influenced by his dad, who was also an athlete. His dad was the World Champion arm wrestler in the 1970s, and also ran a couple of marathons. As a child, Ryan was dragged along with his dad when competing. Then he found out that he too is good at running, in fact he set a couple of national records in running and road races as a child.

He wanted to become a professional runner but he realized that it’s difficult for him because of his physique which is a little bit bigger than others. Growing up he was Ryan the runner but had to let go and move on from that dream. But still he kept on training.

Years went by, a friend of his talked about the Spartan race in their hometown. At that time, he did not even know what it was and so he checked it online. He learned that it was a mixture of endurance running but needed to be strong also because it consisted of other obstacles in the said sport. His dream of becoming an athlete revived, that it is possible but in a completely different sport.

Then around 2019 - 2020, Deka fit appeared. Deka fit allowed him to get into what he always enjoyed doing. That’s when he decided to put all his efforts and time into the Deka sport.

Plot twist happened to Ryan even with his achievements, he felt very unfulfilled and even diagnosed with depression and anxiety. But it did not show since he’s still performing really well. He said “If you’re always chasing trophies and titles, you’re always gonna be left unfulfilled and unsatisfied. There’s always gonna be the next thing. There’s always going to be something else.”

He was approached if he was interested in going to Canada and helping in the Deka training seminar with the people who run Pure Impact Athletics, a Deka affiliate in Canada. He did not hesitate and said yes, to see something new in Canada, since never been there and to get involved in a community.

He started his coaching business 5-6 months ago. He learned a lot through the years and wanted to give it back and share it to people.

Point:

  1. A great way for training a Deka Strong is to do EMOM work “Every Minute On The Minute”. Each station, work for about 30 seconds and get 30 second recovery.

  2. Set your mind to it and expect to exceed your physical capacity.

  3. Push a little bit harder than you think you can.

  4. Legacy doesn’t have to be accomplishments but something you can share to people.
