Dr. Charlie Weingroff is one of the most sought-after professionals world-wide in physical therapy and athletic performance. He is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a Certified Athletic Trainer, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist who has worked with countless A-List celebrities, professional athletes, as well as the general population. In this episode of the Overcomer’s Podcast, Charlie shares with us how adversity has shaped him.
He also asks the question: Why would anyone do what they do if they didn’t think they were the best?
His Training = Rehab series is often discussed as a thought leading model that brought to light the value of medical, fitness, and science professionals all working together as one staff or unit. The T=R DVD series is often recognized as the most successful train-the-trainer product over the last decade.
Charlie says that there was no one identifiable event that inspired his passion for his field. However, when you have experiences that suggest that you’re “one degree away from losing everything” – it crafts a mindset that does not want to lose. Adversity in his life has shaped him. After five or six life changing events happen in your life, you realize that when rough things happen, it’s easier to get through the next one because it’s happened multiple times. You say to yourself, “I’m sure there’s a cost to this, but I feel more armored.” Things that happened ten years ago don’t bother you anymore. You realize that when something bad happens, something better is about to happen.
In working with people, Charlie has learned that it is more and more common that clients in pain or who have an injury choose fitness professionals to guide their solutions. Often it is obvious that these clients can’t safely execute all the exercises in a great program because of their injuries or pain. Referring out to health care professionals should still fit under the same umbrella of values and priorities as the fitness profession, and Lateralizations and Regressions provides that system for all proper professionals to work together for the benefit of the client. It should be a collaborative measure.
